Definitions:

Main Pages: Pages in your website that appear on the menu.
Sub Pages: Side topics relating to a main page.
Sub-pages are often called child-pages and the the page they stem from is a parent-page.

You can customize your menu to either show or hide sub pages. For more information see Menu and Managing Pages.

Each main page that is a parent for one or more sub pages will have an arrow to the left of their PageID. Clicking on one of these arrows will refresh the page, revealing sub pages for that section. Clicking that arrow again will hide sub pages. Below shows an example.

Search Stuff

This section assists with website recognition on the search engines. Information in this section can be assigned to each individual page in your website. To access this information for a particular page, in Page Manager click on the Aplinx Edit Icon and then select 'Search Stuff' from the menu. Doing this will open a window similar to the one shown below:

search stuff screen

The Search Stuff screen is broken up into three sections:

  • Title is what appears at the top of your webpage when it is displayed in an Internet browser (such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla). In the small image below, the Title is in the blue bar - above the browser's menu - and is generally followed by the name of the Internet browser you are using.

    page title

The Title of your webpage may also appear in search engine 'search results' and the text that may be selected by a user in order to view your website.

When choosing what text to enter into this section, you should select something that well describes what your website is and what the page is about. For example, "Your Company Name - This Page Name". If you require ideas, try looking at other websites and take note of how the pages have been named. Also identify what you would like the title to be, as shown in a search engine's results.

Please Note: Some search engines will not use this section as the title displayed in the search results, instead they may display a prominant piece of text from within your webpage.

  • Keywords assist some search engines (dependant on how the search process has been compiled for that particular engine though). One general method that the keywords can be used by search engines is - the engine will scan the keywords, and the page, if the text on your page relates well to the keywords the ranking in the search results may improve. The opposite may occur if keywords and the text are unrelated.

  • Description, like the page's Title, may be displayed in search results. Once again though, this can be dependant on the particular search engine as to whether or not this or a section of the webpage's text is used. The description should be short and to the point - it is used to interest the search engine's users into visiting your website.

When you have entered the desired information into the three boxes on this page, click the save button. The Page Manager will reload - the last page to be edited will be highlighted.

Sitemaps

When you create a website in Aplinx, a sitemap is automatically generated by the system each time pages are added or removed from your Page Manager. The sitemap is a background file that may be accessed by search engines when they are indexing your website. A thorough search engine will index all pages appearing on your sitemap.

If you do not wish for a page in your site to be indexed by the search engines, you should specify this in the page's settings defined in Page Manager.

Hiding Pages From Search Engines

All pages in your website will appear on this sitemap, unless you have specified "do not index" in the page's properties.

All pages that are hidden on the menu will still appear on the sitemap - and therefore may be accessed by the search engines - unless you specify "do not index" in the page's properties.

To mark a page as 'private' - so that it does not appear in search engine's indexes or search result lists:

  1. Enter the Page Manager as described above
  2. Click the edit link (or aplinx icon) to load the page options menu
  3. From the page options menu, select the Properties link
  4. The Page Properties screen will load. On the right hand side of this screen, next to "Do not index?", tick the box.
  5. Clicking Save will update the sitemap.

If you wish for the search engine to access the page again, simply ensure that the do not index checkbox is not ticked.

If you wish to view a complete list of all pages that are not indexed from search engines, in your Internet browser, go to your website and type /robots.txt after your domain name. If no pages are hidden, the list should appear like this:

User-agent: *
Visit-time: 1300-1600
Request-rate: 1/10
Sitemap: http://yoursite.aplinx.com/sitemap.xml

When a page is hidden, it will appear in this manner:

User-agent: *
Visit-time: 1300-1600
Request-rate: 1/10
Disallow: /hidden_page_name
Disallow: /?pageid=123
Sitemap: http://yoursite.aplinx.com/sitemap.xml

Please note: the above method is for hiding a page only. This will not prevent the pages from being accessed by everyday users. If you wish to prevent access to a page (ie: users must login to view it) you should define the  page's Permissions.
