Article Styles

Short Description

Articles styles are a very useful way of unifying the formatting of a site. Default styles can be set for items such as headings, paragraphs and links. These defined styles can also be used and viewed when creating an article in the Article Editor.

It is recommended that you choose Heading types, from H1 to H6 to organize your paragraphs, instead of adding font and size each time you have a heading. H1 is usually the most prominent Heading used in the site. By using Article Styles instead of individually editing your articles with their presentational information you can save a lot of time. Just change the Article Style of a paragraph for instance and all the paragraphs in your site will change. Any other formatting within the article however will override the preset Article Styles.

The 'Type' column shown in the Article Style Manager lists the style types that may be preset for use in the Article Editor. The 'Style' column in this table shows the CSS code representing the style that is applied to that style type.

Understanding Article Style Types

It is highly recommended that when editing your articles, you choose paragraph or Heading types, from 'Heading 1' to 'Heading 6', to organise your paragraphs instead of individually adding font and size to each object in an article. 'Heading 1' is usually the most prominent text on a webpage. Applying Article Styles will also help save time if your site requires updating. Changing the font colour of all headings for example is as simple as editing the 'Heading 1' style.

Each of the Style types are outlined below:

Article

Insert Font information here. This will affect all of the text contained in articles.

Paragraph

This style affects all text within <p></p> tags (shown in the HTML source code). Most of an article will generally fall into this category. By default, paragraphs will be formatted with one clear line before and after the text contained in them.

Heading 1 -
Heading 6

Heading 1 is intended to be the higher level and Heading 6 is the lower level heading. Headings may be bolder fonts, or coloured to stand out above the general paragraph and article text. Headings will by default format onto a new line in the article. EG:

Heading

Link

Any links on a page, including links to page anchors will be governed by styles applied here.

Link (visited)

A page/link which the user has visited (once this appears in their browser's history) will be affected by this style type.

Link (hover)

The rollover state - how a link will appear when a mouse cursor is hovering above it.

Link (active)

When the the mouse button is being clicked on a link, it will change to reflect the Link (active) style.

Formatted

Formatted refers to pre formatted text. Where this style is applied, text shown to the user will generally include spaces and line breaks contained in the source code. By default, this style should be set to a fixed width font, such as courier.

Address

This style type is used to govern the appearance of an email address in an article. The Address style will by default format text within it onto a new line in the article. EG:

email@yourbusiness.domain

Unordered List

Uses dots or pictures to indicate a list. The bullet type can be set in the List section of the style editor.

Ordered List

Uses numbers to order the list.

Custom

You may define custom styles specific to the articles in your site. Once created, these article styles will appear in the format menu of the Article Editor.

The picture below shows how the formatting styles appear in the Article Editor.
